According to Thai media reports, a photo of Thai national badminton player Sapsiree Taerattanachai wearing an indigo-blue Thai team uniform has sparked heated debate on social media after it was shared recently. It is revealed that this outfit will serve as the opening ceremony uniform for the Thai team at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
On social media, many users commented that while the fabric was comfortable and the patterns appealing, the design needed to be seen first. However, some likened it to a village head's uniform, while others said it resembled a county magistrate's attire. Some even joked, "Is this the so-called soft power? The rustic vibe is too strong!"
Netizens also compared the opening ceremony outfits of other countries, such as Mongolia's, which was praised for its perfect blend of aesthetics and tradition, hailed as a highly designed uniform. South Korea's, inspired by taekwondo competition uniforms, was simple yet highly praised. Even Haiti, a small country in North America, received praise for its impeccable design.
In contrast, Thai netizens expressed dissatisfaction with their country's design, some arguing that it lacked modernity. Many even used AI to create alternative Thai team uniforms, one of which featured a silk dress adorned with various Thai patterns, looking quite impressive, simple, elegant, and expensive, with uniqueness and national character that could effectively convey Thai identity.
The controversy surrounding the design of the opening ceremony uniforms has escalated to the point where Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha had to intervene, stating that people have diverse opinions. Some find the fabric beautiful, while others consider it unattractive or outdated, or prefer other styles. He urged respect for the designers and hoped that people would not dwell on this matter but focus on other issues, such as the drug problem.
Additionally, according to Thai team leader Thanawat Chaiprasert, due to the possibility of athletes taking a boat tour on the Seine River during the opening ceremony and the recent warm weather in Paris, Thai national athletes might not wear the Grand Sport-designed uniforms during the ceremony. Another meeting may be held to select the final attire for the opening ceremony.
