At 3 pm on August 14th, the Thai Constitutional Court delivered its verdict on the case regarding the legality of Prime Minister Sudirawa's appointment of Pichai, a former minister in the Prime Minister's Office. The court ultimately ruled that Sudirawa would be dismissed from his position with immediate effect.
The case originated from a lawsuit filed by 40 senators, accusing Prime Minister Sudirawa of appointing Pichai as a minister in the Prime Minister's Office despite knowing or having reason to know that Pichai lacked the necessary qualifications or had violated constitutional provisions. As a result, Sudirawa's position as Prime Minister should be terminated in accordance with Article 170 of the Constitution.
After deliberation, the Constitutional Court, by a majority vote of 5 to 4, terminated Sudirawa's eligibility to serve as Prime Minister. The court deemed Sudirawa's actions to have lacked integrity and to have severely breached the moral standards stipulated in Articles 160(4) and (5) of the Constitution.
Following Sudirawa's dismissal, the Thai cabinet will become a caretaker government, and Deputy Prime Minister Prutan will temporarily assume the duties of Prime Minister.
After the Constitutional Court's ruling to remove Sudirawa from his position as Prime Minister, Sudirawa expressed his acceptance of the court's decision and acknowledged that he ceased to be Prime Minister after 3:30 pm that day. He stated that he had no objections to the verdict but regretted being accused of lacking integrity, as he firmly believed himself to be a person of moral integrity.
Sudirawa also mentioned that it was unclear whether government policies would continue to advance, as he was uncertain who would become the next Prime Minister. This matter would be decided by the acting Prime Minister and the new Prime Minister. He expressed his intention to continue contributing to the country in other capacities.
When asked by reporters if he had anticipated this outcome and about his future plans, Sudirawa said he had not foreseen this situation but accepted the outcome without further contemplation. Next, he might proceed with his mother's sea burial ceremony earlier than planned.
Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Commerce Prutan will serve as the acting Prime Minister, and the current cabinet will continue to function as a caretaker government until a new Prime Minister is appointed and forms a new government.
